Daesung Group Becomes Korea’s 4th Mobile Carrier



Daesung Group’s (Younghoon David Kim, CEO) holding company Daesung Holdings application to the Korea Communication Commission to become a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), in an effort to make a full-scale entry into the MVNO business has been accepted.

Daesung Holding’s IT division plans to provide not only voice services but also data only service such as M2M (machine to machine) services. Accordingly, Daesung Holdings has begun talks with MNOs (SKT, KT, LGU+) and other telecommunication infrastructure companies. In addition, in the mobile communications market Daesung Holdings, which has the right to provide Skype services in Korea as well as its subsidiary KOREA.COM will use their synergy to provide differentiated services.

With the goal of becoming an integrated telecommunication company, Daesung Holdings plans to expand its current communication and IT portfolio, beginning with its registration for MVNO. Last month, Daesung Holdings entered into an agreement with global communications platform provider Skype to provide Skype services in Korea as of July 14.

Daesung Holdings plans to begin MVNO in the second half of next year and aims to secure 1 million subscribers in the first stage of operations.  

Noh Kyung-Jin, VP of Daesung Holdings’ IT division stated “With the addition of MVNO business to our IT business unit, we are able to provide services and formulate strategies that are differentiated from those of other communication service providers.”
