Younghoon David Kim, Daesung Group Chairman, Appointed Co-Chairman of ABAC Technology and Information Working Group (TIWG) - Kim to Assume Leadership Role in Advancing Climate Change Countermeasures and Manage Issues Surrounding Climate Change in the Asia-Pacific [February 14, 2008] Daesung Group Chairman Younghoon David Kim was appointed Co-Chairman of the ABAC (APEC Business Advisory Council) Technology and Information Working Group (TIWG) in role that will have him spearheading issues surrounding climate change. The ABAC Technology and Information Working Group (TIWG) is responsible for integrating issues, including energy security, climate change, intellectual property rights, and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the Asia-Pacific, and communicating the interests of entrepreneurs to country leaders. At the recent ABAC TIWG meeting held in Indonesia, Chairman Younghoon David Kim received wide recognition for the vision and success of Daesung Group’s renewable energy projects and strategies thus leading to his appointment as Co-Chairman of the Working Group. Through TIWG activities and established energy networking, Chairman Younghoon David Kim will deliver and develop both ‘Best Practice Sharing Systems’ in renewable energy and also knowledge and technology on energy efficiency, with aims to reduce greenhouse gas emission levels and control climate change. Detailed reports on prospective countermeasures and strategies will be incorporated in reports by APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT), APEC Finance Ministers, and ABAC. ABAC has stated its regional goal to reduce energy intensity by 25% by 2030. The Daesung Group Chairman noted, “The Asia-Pacific is the subjection of intensive attention from the United States., China and other major energy-consuming countries, perhaps because it is a region that is in most need of best practices in the development of renewable energy to mitigate global climate change and also improve in energy efficiency. Through the ABAC TIWG I will commit my efforts to forming practical, economically feasible plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Asia-Pacific.” International energy expert Chairman Younghoon David Kim currently serves as Vice-Chair of the World Energy Council (WEC) and Co-Chair of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) Technology and Information Working Group (TIWG). In the effort to form national and systematic approaches to mitigating climate change, Chairman Kim pushed for “regular dialogue between WEC and ABAC” at the ABAC Member Forum held in Sydney, Australia in August 2007 and at the WEC Asia Regional meeting held in New Delhi, India this month. Daesung Group has developed into a recognized energy expert and, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change, invested in the development of a solar-wind cogeneration system since 2003. Currently underway is the Green Eco-Energy Park (GEEP) Project through which Daesung Group will install its solar-wind cogeneration system and an underground water-pumping system on 815 acres of land in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, with aims to avert desertification and promote afforestation. The GEEP Project pioneers in the development of water resources, prevention of desertification, and control of sand and dust storms in Mongolia. It is a ‘global project’ in that it not only contributes to the mitigation of climate change but meets the needs of energy-starved communities through its provision of renewable energy supplies for local use. The WEC recently announced it as the ‘flagship project’ of Asia-Pacific. ABAC was created in 1995 to provide business perspectives on specific areas of cooperation to APEC and is comprised of three members of the private sector from each economy. The Korean ABAC members are: Mr. Younghoon David Kim, Chairman and CEO of Daesung Group (appointed in 1999); Mr. Jae-Hyun Hyun, Chairman of Tong Yang Group (1996); and Mr. Jay-Joon Yoon, Pr
