[Source: Kookmin Ilbo] "Brown University Student Won Hoe Gu's Study Tips, Prayer and Meditation Before All Else" November 19, 2007 Twenty-year-old freshman at Brown University Won Hoe Gu is content with the nickname he's been given by his American friends. In English his name is pronounced "One Way," thus the nickname, "One Way." He likes it because he believes it signifies a "one-way life lived for Jesus." Just like the verse, "I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14), Won Hoe's life points toward Jesus. Won Hoe, whose overall dream and goal was to study hard, had been longing to tell his friends about the real reason why he feels he must study. "The reason why I study and dream big dreams is because I want to be used for God's kingdom. I know God has a specific plan and purpose for me. It is not so much the walk of success that brings glory to God but a lifelong devotion of a heart that is wholly set on God's sign post standing at the end of the road. And that is the real reason why I study." To Won Hoe his parents were his teachers and mentors. He grew up under faith-based parenting. Both his father, an ordinary salary man, and mother, a stay-at-home mom, promoted balanced development of intellect, character, and spirituality. Won Hoe, who at 24 months old still could not talk, was nevertheless taught the discipline of prayer and meditation early on. Won Hoe did not receive any special form of education, be it early childhood education or private tutoring. The family meditated on the Bible every morning and had family worship in the evenings. Every night before an exam, his father held Won Hoe's hands and prayed a prayer of blessing over him. Won Hoe naturally developed a deep sense of respect for his father. Though brought up in a Christian household, it wasn't until in junior high school that Won Hoe truly encountered God. He was a member of the Christian choir at his school. One day he decided to practice by himself in the choir room. As he sat there praying, he saw a vision of Jesus standing on a hillside where the sun shone brightly, his nail-scarred hands visible, asking, "Won Hoe, would you die for me? I love you." At that moment Won Hoe realized how great Jesus' love really is. The vision confirmed his faith. And whenever his friends asked what the secret to his academic performance was, he witnessed to them. While attending Sanbon Middle School, Won Hoe displayed outstanding mathematical skills, receiving gold standing in both the Korea Olympiad for the Gifted and the Korea Mathematics Olympiad. He received straight A's every term since enrolling in the Korea Science Academy in 2003. Won Hoe was voted president of the school council and received the "Ministry of Science and Technology, Minister's Award of Excellence," the highest award granted to the top graduating student. Through his parents, Won Hoe learned early on that 'true studying' involves the discovery of new truths. During his elementary school days, he did not resort to the Internet for quick answers, as so many of classmates did, but instead researched related books and encyclopedias, gaining deep insight and knowledge in the process. His efforts paid off at the Korea Science Academy, where all assignments were to be completed as reports. As a result, studying was not burdensome but engaging for him. What surprised everyone, more than anything, was the fact that Won Hoe was admitted to Brown University, which is among the 8 Ivy League schools in the US, despite just 3 months of preparation for the SATs. He considers Rhode Island the mission field God has placed him in and he is preparing for his future in prayer. He does not consider himself a genius. Rather, he believes God has granted him His wisdom and that he must use this wisdom for God's glory. Won Hoe, who awaits the release of his first book "THE REASON WHY I DREAM: THE STORY OF
