[Source: Maeil Newspaper] "The Next Generation Web Service" October 31, 2007 Though not everyone may be aware of Moore's Law--which roughly states that the number of transistors, or the capacity of micro chips, doubles every 18 months--most observers are aware of the rapid rate at which Internet contents are increasing. If the first wave of the Internet was about making offline resources available online, with the introduction of the 'Web 2.0 Generation' and user-created content (UCC) services, we are now witnessing a transition away from offline resources to online resources at unprecedented speed. At the advent of the web when the range of available contents was still very limited, the more results found, the better the search engine. But today, in the face of information overflows, search engines are judged based on how accurate the results are and how quickly they are retrieved. And in meeting such expectations, the Google search engine has risen to global prominence. Sir Tim Berners-Lee, developer of the World Wide Web (www), coined the notion of the "semantic web" (now referred to as "Web 3.0") to describe a phenomenon whereby digitalized information and content are understandable by computers. How convenient would it be if by typing a specific question in the search engine, such as "I am looking for a travel package for the first week of December, for my ten-year-old daughter and me, within a budget of 2 million won," a complete list of travel packages catered to such requests, plus reservations, were made available? A recent issue of the "New York Time" wrote: "From the billions of documents that form the World Wide Web and the links that weave them together, computer scientists and a growing collection of start-up companies are finding new ways to mine human intelligence…. Referred to as Web 3.0, the effort is in its infancy…the underlying technologies are rapidly gaining adherents…" "Personalized" services, according to the blog writer, are the key to next-generation web services. At times users do not know exactly what they are searching for or what words to enter into the search engine. The public has a tendency also to resort to simple forms such as television. The next-generation web service will provide user-personalized services, wherein search results are retrieved specifically in accordance with word choice and questions, personal preferences, and other requests. There is already a silent battle currently taking place in Korea between portal sites, in preparation for the debut of the Web 3.0 search engine. Web 3.0 seminars are being held here and there. Small but revolutionary services, such as Allblog and Wizard (wzd), are winning over the monitors of netizens. Korea.com is preparing for the launch of its User Created Portal (UCP) services at the end of the year, through which users will have the liberty to create and distribute contents and will bring a new wave to the portal market. Similar to the way various structures can be built with toy building blocks, Korea.com's UCP services will make diverse "gadgets" (options) available for users to freely use user-posted contents and to create their own "personalized" portals. Existing "personalized portal" services may have allowed users to personalize their portals, but Korea.com's UCP services will give users the liberty to create and share their own personalized portals. "Mini-homepages," "cafes," and other online communities are no longer simple hobbies but have now become a means of communication--a lifestyle. One of the major factors in the success or failure of a web service is the structure of the user-based online social network. The top position in the category of Internet sites changes every two years in Korea. Today, Naver may hold a solid ranking as the no.1 Internet site in Korea, but not for long as competitive battles for its position are taking place under the waters. The key to stealing tha
