FROM: [Seoul Economic Daily] July 2, 2007“Forming a Renewable Energy Cluster on the East Coast” (p. A29) The Gyeongbuk province plans to form a renewable energy cluster with Pohang, Gyeongju, Yeongdeok, Uljin, and other central east coast cities. The project to establish a low-risk nuclear waste site, despite being the third largest government-initiated project in 2005, faced much opposition, especially due to the so-called NIMBY (not in my backyard) Syndrome. The site was, however, established in Gyeongju, and following the successful location of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP)’s proton accelerator facilities, plans to form the renewable energy cluster were furthered. Daesung Group is currently in the process of signing an MOU regarding the formation of a renewable energy cluster on the east coast. |
