Title A People-Gathering City, Daegu 2007.04.18

FROM:

[Maeil Business Newspaper/ Wednesday, April 18, 2007] A People-Gathering City, Daegu Younghoon David Kim (Chairman & CEO of the Daesung Group) The atmosphere in Daegu is changing. A clear sense of confidence and pride can be found on the faces of public leaders and even residents뾠hange evident since the announcement of Daegu as the host of the 2011 IAAF (International Association of Athletics Foundation) World Championships in Athletics. Years ago, many were dubious about Daegu뭩 bid for the event뾭erhaps because the event has been staged mostly in Europe and never in mainland Asia, and because Korean athletes do not occupy high positions in the world of athletics, with the exception of the marathon category. For example, Mal Gu Seo뭩 1979 national record in the 100m dash has yet to be broken in Korea. Despite unfavorable conditions as such, we did it! Thanks to Daegu, Korea will soon have staged 뱓he Big 3?world sporting events뾲he Olympics, the FIFA World Cup, and the IAAF World Championships뾱omething the U.S.A. has not yet accomplished. We anticipate the event will create more than 6,800 jobs and bring about an economic ripple effect of more than 500 billion won. More importantly, the hosting of the event will increase the city뭩 reputation and lead to the globalization of thought in the local people. The 1988 Olympics was held in Korea at around the time worldwide demands for improved quality of the manufacturing industry, as opposed to quantity, were on the rise. Not only did the hosting of the Olympics present the newly industrialized nation of Korea with the golden opportunity to introduce herself to the world but also played a key role in bringing about a revolution in the Korean people뭩 thoughts. Similarly, Daegu뭩 hosting of the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Athletics will make known the city to the global economic community and also widen the local people뭩 perspectives beyond the local and toward the global. In addition to the winning of the bid for the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Daegu was selected as Korea뭩 candidate city for the bid to host the 2013 World Economic Council (WEC) Congress. Though it is too early to celebrate, as several other countries have also entered into the running and the final decision on the host country will be announced in September 2008 in Mexico, Daegu celebrates its small victory over Seoul, Busan, Jeju, and other top candidate cities. The WEC is the world뭩 largest energy organization, with member committees in over 90 of the largest energy-producing and energy-consuming countries around the globe. The triennial WEC Congress is a ten-day, world-scale conference with an attendance of more than 5,000 consisting of government officials, energy CEOs, scholars, and energy experts, and is thus considered the Olympics of the energy industry. As Vice Chairman of the WEC, Younghoon David Kim has been an integral part in the selection of Daegu as Korea뭩 candidate city for the bid and will continue to promote the city뭩 bid for the time leading to the decision in 2008. Attending international meetings abroad, one may find oneself in various cities for the first time and, immediately drawn to it, one may tell others about it and even visit again some time later. Daegu can make its name known through the hosting of various international events and introduce itself to the world as an industrialized, business friendly, environmentally friendly, and promising city. People are now beginning to gather in Daegu. It has reached the time to build its image as a city that people around the global would most want to visit, live in, and invest in. We hope to see it become a place where all peoples of the globe can seek rest.
