[Kookmin Daily/ 07/03/26] [Christian CEO0 (5) Daesung Group CEO Kim Young Hoon … “Book of Proverbs, a report to the corporate Management Wisdom.” Educational background of Kim Young Hoon(55), CEO of Daesung Group is worth a glance; it is one very fancy one. Having gone to Kyung Ki High School, Law School at Seoul National University, followed by a MBA degree at Michigan University in America, Kim pursued another advanced degree in Global Economics at Harvard University. To everyone’s surprise, Kim entered Harvard Divinity School. Asked if it was for his academic curiosity, Kim says no. He had then seriously wished to be a pastor and he had actually, upon his graduation from the Divinity School, carried out some time of pastoral duties in Boston. However, he gave up his dream to be a pastor as his father, who is also the founder of the Group called for him. Had he not faced any dissonance or difficulties in the hectic and dry reality as someone who had dreamt of serving God? “I did once look back, but I feel God’s abundant grace even more as I get involved in the corporate management. Working hard, getting to know God, and even working with God at sites gives me indescribable joy.” CEO Kim gets ideas and business visions from the Bible. He says, one can have better eyes for the world as the Bible is enriched with human wisdom and history. The Bible is different from the ordinary management publications. He emphasized that one can find overflowing positive stories about wealth and wealthy people. “In the Bible, we can find wise and righteous stories about wealthy people, for example, Abraham, Jacob and Isaac. What they have in common is that they genuine awed God and had wisdom. Rich people who are righteous and wise are role models for people of today.” CEO Kim’s praise and love for the book of Proverbs is extraordinary. For this reason, he has published, through Daesung Group subsidiary, Daesung.Com, The Royal Way. The book is written in Korean, Japanese and Chinese. Everyone at Daesung holds his business card inscribed “A good name is more desirable than great riches” Proverbs 22:1. CEO Kim stated “Book of Proverbs provides guidelines for reporting on wise corporate management, how to be successful and how to make use of the wealth once given.” He especially meditates chapter 3:13~17, chapter 8:10∼21, chapter 11:25, chapter 22: 4, and chapter 24: 3∼6. Kim was kind enough to write the verses down and hand the memo to the reporter personally. CEO Kim aims for specialization, rationalization and globalization. He said that his father had successfully gotten specialization and rationalization into the stride, and now, it is time for him to get globalization into the stride. To do so, he has taken a roles as the Vice Chairman to the World Energy Council, a Korea Representative to the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) among other titles. However, he pointed out that there’s a misconception amongst the Koreans about ‘globalization.’ Globalization does not mean blindly accepting the global standard, but it also means spreading the Korean standard to the world and striving to apply our standard to the global standard. Kim emphasized home service and bible studies at home as important education tools for children. Except busy days or unless he has official plans, he worships with his children every night and shares the book of Proverbs. ‘Respect and obey the Lord! This is the beginning of knowledge (Proverbs 1:7), and so, it is like pouring water over a duck's back, if one dose not respect God first.
