FROM: [Maeil Newspaper/07/03/21] [Economics Column] Dubai Vision Marketing - (Online) An acquaintance threw a question during a meal one day. “Do you know where, in the world, the tallest building is located?” The Empire State building is no longer the tallest skyscraper when one sees many 100 floor skyscrapers all around the world these days. No one really knew the answer. Someone said it is in the United States, someone said in Malaysia. The answer was ‘in Taiwan’, Taipei building; 509m high, 101 floors. What is interesting is that a lot of people believed the tallest building was in Dubai. People probably have heard about one building, due to be completed in the year 2008, 160floors and 700meters high, the Burj Dubai building. While Taiwan, having raised the tallest building in the world but failed in publicizing, Dubai has already taken a step in publicizing to the world that it is raising a skyscraper that has yet to be completed. An Arab’s marketing seems superior to a Chinese’s who is known for his excellent sales tactics. A mirage-like city in Dubai is the topic of a conversation these days There are books analyzing Dubai success. However, when one actually goes to Dubai, there is really nothing to see. The whole city is “under construction.” So called ‘the world’s tallest building, Burj Dubai’, ‘the palm tree shaped palm island’, ‘The World’ that looks after the world map are all under construction, so one can only observe from afar the construction site. What can explain this world’s attention to Dubai even when its major institution has not been raised? Analysts say it is “the infinite imagination and creative leadership.” Dubai’s success, in the last decade, is known to be ‘the Creation’ or ‘the legend.’ Such miracle was possible with the leadership of the deceased King Rashid and his third son Muhammad. The King had always voiced that UAE will have to be prepared and ready for the era after oil. The country never really owned an asset, King Rashid announced to make a small sea village in the desert a major hub of the Middle East. This plan was never really a popular one, there were opposition and also short of budget. The construction began in 1959, and in 1964, the Petroleum/ oil spot was found. They are constructing future Dubai on the oil-dollar capital and have changed Islamic conservative minds of Dubai people. One can see and feel all around the city in Dubai, its confidence ‘Nothing is impossible. ’ Is Dubai really the best? The fact of the matter is that not everything about Dubai is so. The best building has not yet been completed, and to our surprise, the landmark, the seven-star hotel is not really a seven star level hotel. Dubai’s indoor ski resort is world’s third biggest, not the first. Still, people believe what is in Dubai is the world’s best. This is where we can give credits to Dubai leaders’ marketing competence. Not yet accomplished, yet a skill to give hope and vision to its people is Dubai’s extraordinary ‘vision marketing.’ Dubai is currently taking a chance with the world and so far, it’s doing a find job. It is the result of leader’s ability and vision to foresee and creativity, bold and decisive investment and an open policy to improve corporate environment. Dubai people say “only 20% of our King’s idea has been accomplished.” Dubai, ‘The Creation ‘they are talking about. The full support and faith toward a leader is also what makes Dubai’s future bright. Presidential candidates are approaching the public with their own campaign pledges in Korea, as the campaign is drawing near. I wish to witness an able leader with fine leadership and vision for better Korea in the future who can bring together people’s mind and competence. |
