FROM: Daesung Group Creates Jeju Island's Largest New & Renewable Energy Farms Daegu City Gas, one of the affiliates of Daesung Group (CEO & Chairman, David Younghoon Kim) announced December 28 that it will create the largest New & Renewable Energy farms on Jeju Island to cover 320,000 pyeong. Daesung entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the residents of Hangwonri, Jeju Island on December 28,, 2005 for this collaborative project. In order to develop these New & Renewable Energy farms, the residents of Hangwonri will provide the land and Daesung will provide technology and financing. After a feasibility test, Daesung and the residents of Hangwonri will make a formal contract in April 2006. Recent preliminary studies have demonstrated the feasibility for wind and solar power generation suitable for residential and commercial purposes. After the contract is signed in April, Daesung Group will invest a total of 13.3 billion KW until 2008 and KEPCO, Korea's government-run power monopoly, will procure and market the total amount of energy produced on the energy farm. The total amount of energy produced can support 40,000 households and will be the largest solar and wind energy utilization complex on Jeju Island. The site, Haengwon-ri, Bukjae-gu, is located in northern Jeju. The area is considered to be the best spot on the island for generating wind and solar power. Once the renewable energy farm is completed, Daesung will be considering further development of the site and nearby areas into an organic farm and theme park, thus creating a integrated tourist attraction featuring wind and solar farm, organic farm, and theme park. Daesung plans to expand globally in the renewable market armed with the technology and know-how acquired from this project. Renewable energy is increasingly sought after as an alternative source of energy throughout the world. Daesung Group has been one of the leaders in the renewable energy field in Korea. An affiliate, Daesung Institute for Clean Energy has developed various kinds of renewable energy technologies and products including the SolaWin System, which is a combined wind and solar power generating system. In 2005 the group drew nation-wide attention with the export of the SolarWin system to Mongolia. |
