FROM: Introductory Speech at Keynote speech of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra : Session 14 (Special Luncheon Session) 12:20 pm, November 18 (Fri.), 2005 Excellencies, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen! It is a distinct honor for me to present our speaker for today, His Excellency Thaksin Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand. Our speaker is someone who does not really need much of an introduction because we all have heard much praises from his own country fellowmen, describing him as 'the best Prime Minister Thailand has ever had'. It was clearly demonstrated last February when he became the first Prime Minister in the long history of Thailand ever to serve two consecutive terms. Mr. Shinawatra started his career by joining the Royal Thai Police Department in 1973, and later earned his doctorate in criminal justice at Sam Houston State University in the United States. In 1987, he founded the Shinawatra Computer and Communications Group, an electronics-based conglomerate, and became the largest mobile phone operator in Thailand. In 1994, he left his company to serve his country as Minister of Foreign Affairs. Prior to taking office as Prime Minister in 2001, he already proved himself to be a man who can excel both in private and public careers. For this, I am one of his great admirers, and have the highest regard for him as a very unique role model. Under his dynamic leadership, I believe we will soon see the same spectacular rise of Thai economy as we have witnessed in his own life. So, it is with great pleasure that I welcome His Excellency Thaksin Shinawatra who will speak today on "Globalization: Issues and Challenges", of which we are all very keen to hear. Please welcome him with a warm round of applause. |
