Welcome Remarks at Opening Plenary

By David Younghoon Kim
Chairman & CEO, Daesung Group
Vice Chairman, World Energy Council
Korean Member, ABAC
November 14, 2005

On behalf of Korean ABAC, I am delighted to welcome you to Busan. I would like to extend special thanks to those who traveled from afar across the ocean.

Korea was once called "a hermit kingdom" and "a land of morning calm". And this image still persists in many parts of the world even after the Seoul Olympic in 1988.

In fact, Korea is one of the most industralized nation with the 11th or 12th largest economy in the world.

For example, Samsung Electronics is pouring out six hundred million sets of mobile phones all over the world each year and Hyundai Shipbuilding was awarded almost all the contracts of the global LNG carriers this year. But still Korea remains mysteriously obscure as a tiny peninsular in Northeastern Asia.

Once, Chinese military philosopher Sun Zi argued that to command battlefield, you must not let your rival know where you are from and where you are headed for. One of the reason of the spectacular rise of Korean economy seems to be exactly this factor of relative obscurity.

I remember from APEC Malaysia a motto, saying, "APEC means Business". I believe that you all agree with this catch phrase.

If APEC means business, I hope ABAC means Benchmarking and Connecting or, I would say, networking.
The best way to do the benchmarking is for CEOs like you to be there yourselves. That's one of the reason why you are here in Korea.
So, please come and see yourselves and visit with as many companies as you are interested in and meet Korean entrepreneurs. We would be glad to assist you in your networking endeavors.

In closing, I wish to thank all of you again and wish you enjoyable and rewarding stay in Busan.

Thank you.
