FROM:

David Younghoon Kim, the Chairman of Daesung Group was elected as a Vice-Chairman of the World Energy Council (WEC) today, at the Executive Assembly in Sri Lanka, Colombo. The World Energy Council is the world’s leading multi-energy organization headquartered in London, consisting of the member committees of energy policy makers and the CEOs from the energy industry in nearly 100 countries around the world. David Younghoon Kim will serve the World Energy Council as the regional Vice-Chairman for the Asia-Pacific for the next three years, to represent and manage the various energy-related matters, for the greatest benefits of not only Korea but also for the 23 member countries of the Asia Pacific. The World Energy Council was founded in 1923 and it now has 82 years of history. WEC is a non-governmental, educational-industrial and multi-energy international organization which deals with all forms of energy works such as oil, coal, nuclear, hydro, new and renewable energy, as well as energy efficiency and energy conservation. WEC is an organization that is accredited and officially approved by the United Nations and it speaks on behalf of the world's energy industry. As the energy related issues reflected through the high oil prices, the Kyoto Protocol on climate changes and so on have recently emerged as crucial for Asian countries, the role of the regional Vice-Chairman is to significantly contribute to the energy security for Asia Pacific countries. On behalf of the Asia Pacific region, David Younghoon Kim will work closely with the WEC members to formulate energy policies to overcome the currently turbulent energy situations. In the mid-1980s Dr. Keun-Mo Jung, the former Minister of Science and Technology, was elected as the Vice-Chairman, but David Younghoon Kim is the first Vice-Chairman of WEC who was elected in the capacity of a CEO of an energy company in Korea. Being aware of the various energy issues involved, WEC has regulated a rule to elect 5 Vice-Chairmen each representing Asia, Africa, North America, South America and Europe, and the energy policies and solutions are formulated in the regional dimension. The Asia-Pacific regional group is composed of 23 countries including Korea, China, and Japan, and is involved in various activities, such as developing the model project of CDM (The Clean Development Mechanism), assisting the developing countries, and holding local Forums. David Younghoon Kim said, “I’ll do my best to cover a wide range of energy related issues and to address the key energy issues on behalf of many countries during the period of my duty. I will also contribute to the energy security, reliability and accessibility to Korea as well as the Asian Pacific countries. It might make the holding of the year 2013 World Energy Congress in Korea possible.”
