Having successfully hosted the 2001 the Intercontinental Cup for Nations, the 2002 World Cup, and the 2003 Daegu Universiad, Daegu is a city rich in sports infrastructure. Now, in preparing to host the 13th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Daegu is also preparing to gain momentum as a hub of education culture and of Korean sports. The World Championships in Athletics are, alongside the Olympics and the World Cup, among the three most popular international sporting events. In 1983, the first World Championships in Athletics took place in Helsinki, Finland, and this year the 10th event will return again to Helsinki. It is now compromised of over 46 different events connecting over 3,000 athletes from 211 countries worldwide, in addition to a separate event for disabled athletes. It is viewed by over four billion people globally, and is the most renowned among single-sport international sporting events. Looking back throughout Korean sporting history, one can see that Korea has excelled in athletics. In 1920, the Chosun Sports Association was established, and in 1929 with the initiation of the Chosun Athletics Championships, Korean athletics began to flourish. Within a mere seven years, in 1936, Sohn Gi-Jung set a world record and won a gold medal at the 11th Berlin Olympics, and in doing so gave Korean athletics the spotlight. Seven years remain until the 13th World Championships in Athletics. If from today we cooperate in a unified spirit, Daegu will undoubtedly gain the rights to host, and furthermore successfully host the 13th World Championships in pride. In a race, one must run directly towards the finish line, not looking to and fro, even until the end as one begins to tire. In this sense, I believe running a race is like navigating the roadmap of life. And like we all fix our minds on a particular goal, and strive to achieve it in every way possible, the manner in which we tackle both athletics and life bear many resemblances. As Daegu, possessing Korea's most excellent sports infrastructure in addition to strong support from citizens, strives to gain the rights to host the 13th World Athletics Championships, Korean sportsmanship will not only become more globally renowned, but also Daegu will be able to launch itself onto the international sporting stage as a global city. Daegu's past mediocre performance in the National Sports Festival is, most commendably, gradually improving. However, as within the athletics events, unfortunately, Daegu's performance remains rather poor, there is a desperate need for a new plan to revive athletics in Daegu. The 'Daegu Athletics Development Plan' has been put into place in order to advance the standard of athletics in Daegu. It entails hosting large sporting events such as the World Championships in Athletics in order to create a means to ameliorate the athletics infrastructure, and in order to create a athletics boom to develop Daegu into an 'Athletics Mecca'. This will not only allow Daegu's standard in athletics to improve vastly, but also raise Daegu's desirability and ability to host large-scale international events. As the World Championships in Athletics are considered to be one of the three most popular international sporting events in addition to the Olympics and the World Cup, hosting the World Championships in Athletics will serve as a gateway to Daegu for foreign investment, and also as a gateway for local companies to gain exposure in the global market. Furthermore, the influx of tourism anticipated during the event in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk Province region will also expedite the development of the local economy. As the 1989 Olympics made Seoul's image as an international city, and as the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup exposed to the global audience the unified passion of the Korean peoples, I believe that the 13th World Championships in Athlet |
