미세 먼지로 인한 불편과 불만이 누적되면서 석탄화력발전소 건설에 반대하는 시위가 잇따르고 있다. 후쿠시마 원전사고와 경주 지진으로 인해 원전에 대한 반대 여론도 더 고조되고 있다.
지속가능한 에너지시스템으로의 전환은 이미 피할 수 없는 선택이 되고 있다. 국제재생에너지기구(IRENA)는 지난해 신재생에너지 발전용량이 8.7% 증가해 2000기가와트를 첫 돌파 했다고 발표했다. 세계 총 발전용량에서 신재생에너지가 차지하는 비중은 이미 30%를 넘어섰고, 2040년경에는 50%에 이를 것으로 국제에너지기구(IEA)는 전망한다.
향후 재생에너지가 화석연료를 빠르게 대체해 나갈 것은 분명하지만 아직은 풀어야 할 문제가 적지 않다. 태양광 전지 등의 생산비용 하락속도가 매우 빠르지만 아직은 초기 시설 투자비가 비싼 데다, 전기생산량이 일정하지 않다 보니 비중이 커지면 안정성 확보를 위해 대규모 전기저장시스템(ESS)에 의존해야 하는 문제가 발생한다. ESS 설치비용은 발전 비용보다 3배 가까이 큰 것으로 알려져 있다. 또한, 실제 전기는 현재 최종 에너지 소비량의 18%에 불과하다. 다시 말해 신재생에너지로 모든 전기를 생산한다 하더라도 나머지 82%에 이르는 수송·산업·난방용 에너지까지 대체하기는 쉽지 않다.
따라서, 더 다양한 친환경 에너지원 개발의 중요성은 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않다. 친환경 에너지원이 다양해질수록 안정적인 에너지공급체계, 나아가 에너지 안보를 더 공고히 할 수 있다.
가장 유력한 새 에너지원 후보 중 하나가 바이오 에너지이다. 미생물은 다양한 환경에서 활동할 수 있고, 심지어 고온, 고압, 무산소의 극한 환경에서도 생체 에너지를 만들어 낸다는 것이 규명되었다. 햇빛은 물론이고, 이산화탄소, 질소 등을 에너지원으로 전환할 수 있어 에너지생산과 동시에 환경정화 작용도 기대할 수 있다.
불과 수 십 년 전까지 실험실 수준 기술이었던 태양광 발전이 경제성을 갖춘 에너지원이 되었다는 점을 생각하면 미생물 에너지도 충분히 가능성이 있다고 본다. 만약 정부의 정책적 지원과 민간의 연구개발 투자 등이 좀더 활발해진다면, 미생물을 통한 자원개발에 더 가속도를 낼 수 있지 않을까 생각한다.
대성그룹은 다음달 창립 70주년을 맞아 미생물을 통해 에너지·물·식량 문제 해결 가능성을 모색해 보는 국제 컨퍼런스를 개최할 계획이다. 국내외 미생물 분야 석학들을 초청해 최신 바이오 기술을 통한 미래 자원확보의 가능성을 알아보는 자리가 될 것으로 기대한다. 국내 미생물 관련 벤처 기업들과 투자자들도 한자리에 초청해 투자를 촉진하는 자리를 마련한다.
에너지 산업은 과거 자본집약산업에서 점차 과학기술을 기반으로 하는 기술집약적인 산업으로 변모하고 있다. 한국 같은 기술 우위국에게는 에너지 강국으로 부상할 수 있는 절호의 기회가 될 것이다. 세계시장 선점을 목표로 미생물 에너지 상용화에 적극 나선다면, 우리 에너지 산업이 도약할 수 있는 또 하나의 발판이 될 수도 있다.
