Time to cultivate talent in green industry

The 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) is held in Copenhagen, Denmark from today till 18th of December, 2009. Presidents and prime ministers of sixty countries all over the world and 190 countries’ representatives are supposed to participate and negotiate a goal of reducing greenhouse gases.

A fact that Children’s Climate Forum is held prior to tensive government representative conference attracts attention. Supervised by UNICEF, 160 children from 44 countries participated and had heated discussions about global warming during last week. The result of children’s conference is submitted to United Nations General Assembly of Climate Change Convention.

Also, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), which is UN-affiliated environment organization, established TUNZA (means ‘to treat with care and love’ in Swahili) program in 2003. TUNZA is a program that provides youth to learn global environmental issues and think about solutions to these issues. Participants of UNEP TUNZA program are given chances to participate in decision-making process of international environmental policy. It is TUNZA’s goal to make future leaders to realize the importance of environmental and climate issues and to cultivate environmental professionals. During UNEP TUNZA conference which was held in Daejeon last August, international youth conference that covers various topics such as sustainable lifestyle that goes along with climate changes was progressed. It was quite surprising that young participants suggested solutions to subjects that are even hard to environment professionals.

Last August, Daesung Group held a Youth Science Camp where making functional game based on topics of climate changes and renewable energy. At the science camp which was held to inform the elementary students of seriousness of climate changes and importance of renewable energy, I was amazed by children’s copious imagination and creativity. Informed of environmental pollution and global warming, and visiting renewable energy facilities, children took seriousness of global warming and importance of alternative energy very seriously. When asked to submit solutions about climate changes and energy issues, the students poured out brilliant ideas and solutions that adults could not think of.

As a company’s biggest assets are talented workers with abundant experience and skills, we already learned that the most important asset for the sustainable development of country is to cultivate talented people through experiences. We need many professionals who will lead the green revolution. Professional groups for immediate help are important, but we need to pay more attention to invest talented workers for the future.

The Green New Deal Group which is an assembly of English Green New Deal professionals chose extensive upbringing of the green color labor (carbon Army) as a core element of successful Green New Deal policy through policy proposal. In Germany which is the leading country of renewable energy, there are 250 thousands people engaged in realm of renewable energy. Recently, Korean government announced a plan for cultivating 100 thousands green workers and creating 810 thousands green color jobs till 2013. There are some positive changes such as newly-organized majors related to green growth including renewable energy at universities. However, it is necessary to foster creative green industry professional groups by developing various programs that grab children’s attention and interest to climate changes and green industry.
