Daesung Group chairman, Younghoon David Kim, talks with Zhang Guobao (張國寶), Vice Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission and Director General of the National Energy Bureau, China. -Talks were held concerning plans to organize an energy fund among five countries in the Asia Pacific region. -Private sector diplomacy in support of Daegu’s bid to host the World Energy Council in 2013. Daesung Group chairman, Yonghoon David Kim, WEC Vice Chair for Asia-Pacific and South Asia visited Zhang Guobao (張國寶), Vice Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission and Director General of the National Energy Bureau to discuss private sector cooperation between energy consuming countries in the Asia Pacific region on June 12, 2008. During an exclusive meeting, Younghoon David Kim and Zhang Guobao discussed issues such as▲ Plan for forming a private sector union of energy funds among 5 major energy consumers (S.Korea, China, U.S.A, Japan, India) in Asia-Pacific region ▲ Plan for countermeasures in response to climate change in the region ▲ China-related issues to be discussed at WEC meeting in July Asia-Pacific. Zhang Guabao is one of the key leaders of Chinese national energy policy. The National Development and Reform Commission, one of China’s six central ministries, is responsible for establishing short and long term economic reform plans, regulating national policy corporations, and foreign capital. The National Development and Reform Commission is also in charge of overseeing the country’s finance and economy ministries. Daesung Group chairman, Yonghoon David Kim, noted that China as one of the world’s major energy consumers has begun to make plans for a post oil era. He added, “Korea and China as consumers of great amounts of energy have great potential for cooperating on the development of nuclear and renewable energy. Chairman Kim also added his prestige to the campaign to host the WEC 2013 Congress in Daegu. On his behalf, key members of the Daesung team attended the China Power & Alternative Energy Summit 2008 on June 13 and began their private diplomatic efforts to drum up support the campaign to host the congress. The Chinese WEC member committee has already pledged its support of Daegu’s bid. The WEC Congress is the world’s most prestigious energy-related gathering in the world and is held every three years. Experts from more than 100 WEC member countries participate in the summit to discuss energy policy. Daegu in South Korea, Durban in South Africa and Copenhagen in Denmark are competing to host the WEC Congress in 2013. The winner will be decided and announced in November by the WEC Executive Committee in Mexico City. The 2010 WEC Congress will be held in Montreal, Canada. Chairman Kim in his role as WEC Regional Vice Chair for Asia-Pacific and South Asia attended the 2nd Global Energy Forum, opening conference of the 2008 Korea Green Energy Expo, in May. One of the highlights of the Forum concerned the Green Eco-energy Park (GEEP) Project. Begun in Mongolia in 2003 as Daesung Group’s SolaWin project, GEEP was selected as a flagship project by WEC. GEEP is expected to play an important role in dealing with the problem of desertification in Mongolia.
