Daesung Group selected as Mongolian partner for International Greenhouse Gas Reduction Support Project Daegu City Gas Co., Ltd.(Daesung Group’s major subsidiary) announced that it was selected as Mongolian partner for International Greenhouse Gas Reduction Support Project by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy on 26th December. It was already assigned as a main company to construct the first solar thermal power plant in Korea on 19th December on the 200 kW tower-type solar thermal power system development project. Daegu City Gas will commence a pilot project using new & renewal energy to supply electricity and water and also to plant trees for Mandakh located in 500km southeast from Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. Korean government will invest KRW 4.2 billion in it. This project will be operated separately from GEEP (Green Eco-Energy Park) project, a kind of desert forestation program nearby Ulaanbaatar. This project will be progressed in phases; generating electricity using a SolaWin(solar-wind hybrid power) system, pumping up groundwater using the electric energy and supplying water to trees and to the back village which barely gets access to electricity due to rapid desertification. Its technologies and know-how will be expanded and applied to the other areas in Mongolia. The reason why Daegu City Gas was designated as the partner for Mongolia is that Daesung Group, the group to which Daegu City Gas belongs, was highly appraised by its accumulated technology of desertification prevention project in Mongolia. It has been studying, developing and launching the application technology of new & renewable energy solutions under the local climate and environment of Mongolia. Daesung Group developed the SolaWin System on 2004 fully utilizing the abundant sunlight and winds in Mongolia. Based on it they are promoting the project GEEP(Green Eco-Energy Park) project to afforest about 3.3 million ㎡ of Nalike village near Ulaanbaatar. The project was launched as ‘Joint Korean-Mongolian International Research’ in June 2007 and it was also adopted as a flagship project of Asia Pacific by WEC (World Energy Council). Daesung Group plans to build up the position of global eco-friendly company, as introducing domestic and international green business keeping pace with 2013 Daegu World Energy Congress attraction Younghoon David Kim, Daesung Group chairman said, “Upon this opportunity of taking order, we will actively participate in Mongolian electricity generating business using new & renewable energy from 2009. Also, we will contribute to prevention of desertification and sandstorms in Northeast Asia, which is one of big international issues, by promoting 'desertification prevention system using new & renewable energy' over desertification areas of Central Asia and Africa.”
