FROM: Daesung Group Chairman Younghoon David Kim’s Significant Contribution Gives Daegu the Upper Hand. Daegu was selected as the venue of the 2013 World Energy Congress on November 7, 2008. Daegu bested rivals Durban, South Africa and Copenhagen, Denmark with a landslide victory at the WEC Executive Assembly in Mexico City. It was Younghoon David Kim, WEC Regional Vice-chair for Asia-Pacific and South Asia who played the most influential role in Daegu’s successful bid. Vice-chair Kim spoke at both the beginning and ending of the final presentation just ahead of the vote by the World Energy Council’s (WEC) Member Committees. Kim noted during his presentation that “Asia is the home to 60 percent of the world’s population representing a microcosm of global energy challenges.” This was followed by one of the Korean bid’s most compelling arguments, “[Asia] is key to determining the world’s response to energy security and climate change.” Kim concluded with “Korea, located in between Japan and China and with great relations with India, has developed advanced energy technology. Korea is a gateway to Asia due to its advantageous geographical location.” As a climax to the presentation, Vice-chair Kim offered to provide a $25,000 award for the congress’s “Most Outstanding Paper” if Daegu were selected. Finally, after the announcement of the choice of Daegu, Vice-chair Kim expressed his great pleasure saying that, “This win will help the entire Korean economy as well as promote our energy industry. It will definitely accelerate our government’s policy of low carbon and green growth.” Daegu’s selection was achieved with the cooperation of Daesung Group Chair Younghoon David Kim and the WEC Korean member committee including Korea Energy Foundation, and Daegu City. Chair Kim has traveled to 12 countries including the United States, Great Britain, China, and Japan to appeal for support of Daegu’s bid since he elected to serve as WEC vice-chair. |
