FROM: Chairman Younghoon David Kim “Exports to the World a Model for Low Carbon and Green Growth” - First Korean to deliver a keynote address at FT-WEC Energy Leaders Summit in London, September 17th - Banquet held to support efforts to secure Daegu's bid as the location for 2013’s WEC Congress As part of his keynote address at the FT-WEC Energy Leader Summit, Younghoon David Kim of Daesung Group Chairman stated that, “As the energy-related problems of poor nations accelerate worldwide desertification and climate change, it is imperative to recognize the new investment opportunities that arise from eco-friendly energy development suitable for these nations.” This message was received with enthusiasm from world renowned energy specialists attending the event. Chairman Kim, the WEC Asia-Pacific and South Asia vice-chairman, emphasized that investment in eco-friendly energy will eventually achieve many things: (1) It will help prevent desertification; (2) Unlike conventional energy requiring long-distance transportation expenses, eco-friendly energy is able to gain the efficiency from its self-sustenance; (3) It will promote the value of land and agriculture by groundwater irrigation; (4) It will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and may be eligible for CDM’s (Clean Development Mechanism); (5) Finally, it will establish a sustainable energy business model. At the summit, Chairman Kim introduced Daesung Group’s GEEP (Green Eco-Energy Park) Project that was selected by WEC as the Asia-Pacific region’s flagship project. The GEEP Project, through the use of wind and solar energy generators utilizes a pumping mechanism to draw groundwater to the surface. With water, it is then possible to cultivate crops. Chairman Kim predicts that through projects like the GEEP, it will be possible to: (1) Solve the issue of scarce drinking water through pumping underground water; (2) Solve issues related to the scarcity of food and create additional income through the selling of those crops. (3) Abate urban centralization and improve rural communities; (4) Develop support for culture and tourism through large scale eco-friendly recreational facilities. Kim revealed that, “The GEEP project is an integrated solution which shows how to combat global desertification.” He also insisted that, “The energy industry should not only see pollution free energy production practices as means to resolve environmental problems but also see it as means to give hope to poor countries.” He urged energy industry representatives to acknowledge this and take part in this goal. “Energy and the environment: a great chance to kill two birds with one stone” Although there have been Koreans that have participated in events sponsored by WEC as deliverers of opening addresses and as panel discussion members, Chairman Kim was the first Korean to present the keynote address at an official WEC event.. It is a meaningful step in non-governmental diplomacy in spite of Korea’s status in the energy industry. Chairman Kim hosted a banquet at London’s St. James Sofitel Hotel on September 16, prior to his delivery of the keynote address. As the vice-chairman of WEC Asia-Pacific, Kim invited seventy energy specialists and each nation’s representative participating in the FT-WEC summit. At that time, Kim appealed to them to support Daegu, Korea as the venue for the 2013 WEC Congress. |
