Attending the first general assembly of WEC-ABAC is the chairman of ABAC TWIG, Yukio Shotoku. [July 18th 2008] As the WEC(World Energy Council) vice chairman for Asia-Pacific and South Asia, the Daesung Group chairman, Younghoon David Kim, will attend the coming WEC Asia-Pacific conference in Nanning, capital of Guangxi autonomous region, China. Here, Chairman Kim will make advances to support Daegu’s bid to host the World Energy Council in 2013 and participate in a number of private diplomatic efforts concerning various energy sources. Among the 27 member nations of WEC Asia-Pacific, attending the conference in China, three candidate nations compete to host the 2013 World Energy Council. Presentations proceed throughout the conference to secure candidacy. These presentations are expected to have a significant effect upon the final candidate selection, which will be decided and announced in November, at the WEC Executive Committee, in Mexico City. On this issue, Chairman Kim plans to take affirmative action, as the vice chair of WEC Asia-Pacific, to earn the support of member committees for Daegu’s bid. Chairman Kim also plans to initiate a WEC-APEC(Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) ABAC(APEC Business Advisory Council) General Assembly, for which he has invested much labor to promote, at the conference in China. For the assembly, the Daesung Group chair invited Yukio Shotoku of ABAC TIWG(Technology & Information Working Group), who is also a chair and corporate advisor of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., to further facilitate discussions on WEC-ABAC and how it is to effectively deal with the upcoming changes in oil prices, energy policies and climate issues. The two international organizations, WEC and ABAC, plan to recognize the general assembly as an opportunity to continuously develop mutual collaborations on energy related issues. As the co-chair of issues relating to the changes in the world’s climate, the vice chair of ABAC TIWG, Younghoon David Kim, will play an important role as WEC and ABAC make their respective deliberations. Also at the conference in China, announcements will be given on the progress of the Green Eco-Energy Park(GEEP) Project in Mongolia. Furthermore, a China-India Energy Summit is to take place there as well. Chairman Kim stated that, “Recent changes in the world’s climate and in oil prices, and the ever increasing effect these changes have on the world today, make one realize how important it is to hold international collaborations concerning the issue of securing the world’s energy.” He also said that, “Especially important are the nations that which demand large amounts of energy, including South Korea, U.S.A., Japan, China, India and various energy consuming nations in the Asia-Pacific region. With this in mind, the Asia-Pacific WEC Conference in China and the commencing WEC-ABAC General Assembly will hereafter gain greater significance.” Additionally, Chairman Kim will attend the Renewable Energy Forum, hosted by WEC, on the 21st of July, a day before the conference in China. The focus of this forum is based on regional efforts to develop renewable energy sources to cope with rising oil prices. The chair will take charge in the first keynote address on the issue of high oil prices and the global supply and demand state of energy. Held every three years, the WEC Congress is known as the most prestigious energy-related gathering in the world. Its host, WEC, also known as the ‘energy branch of the UN’, is the foremost multinational organization in the energy field. Experts from the 93 WEC member countries participate in discussions on energy policies and take part in settling a number of energy-related treaties. Some people refer to this congress as the ‘Energy Olympics’. Daegu in South Korea, Durban in South Africa and Copenhagen in Denmark are competing to host the WEC Congress in 2013. The winner will be decided and announced in November, by the WEC Executive Committee, in Mexico City. The 2010 WEC Congress will be held in Montreal, Canada. |
