FROM: Younghoon David Kim, Daesung Group Chairman, Chairs WEC Regional Meeting in China Lobbies for Daegu’s Bid to Host 2013 World Energy Congress - ABAC's Yukio Shotoku Attends WEC Regional Meeting Younghoon David Kim, Daesung Group chairman and WEC (World Energy Council) Regional Vice Chair for Asia-Pacific and South Asia, will chair the upcoming WEC Asia Regional Meeting in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi autonomous region in southern China. Chairman Kim will lobby for support of Daegu’s bid to host the WEC Congress in 2013 and participate in a number of private diplomatic efforts in energy-related fields. While the 27 member nations of WEC Asia-Pacific participate in this China’s conference, the three candidate nations competing to host the 2013 WEC Congress will give presentations throughout the conference to promote their candidacies. It is expected that these presentations will significantly impact on the final candidate selection, which will be decided at the WEC Executive Assembly in Mexico City in November. Chairman Kim plans to be proactive in earning member committees’ support for Daegu’s bid. The WEC-ABAC (APEC Business Advisory Council) dialogue which chair Kim has pushed with his efforts will be formally initiated at this meeting in China. Chair Kim invited Yukio Shotoku, the executive of ABAC TIWG (Technology & Information Working Group) and corporate advisor of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., to facilitate discussions on WEC-ABAC cooperation. They will discuss how to effectively deal with changes in oil prices, energy policies, and climate issues. The two international organizations, WEC and ABAC, plan to collaborate on energy-related issues. Chairman Kim will play an important role as he is both WEC Asia-Pacific and South Asia vice-chair and ABAC TIWG co-chairman. At this conference, a progress report on the Green Eco-Energy Park (GEEP) Project in Mongolia will be given. Discussions on the China-India Energy Summit are to take place also. Chairman Kim stated that, “Climate change and the increase in oil prices impact the entire world and make us realize how important it is to hold international consultations concerning the issue of energy security.” He added, “It is vital that nations in the Asia-Pacific region which are large energy consumers such as South Korea, the United States, Japan, China, India cooperate with each other. In this respect, the Asia-Pacific WEC Conference in China and the ongoing WEC-ABAC dialogue will have great significance.” Chairman Kim will also attend a renewable energy forum with the theme of “Regional Development of Renewable Energy Sources to Cope with Rising Oil Prices,” hosted by WEC, on July 21. As chair, he will deliver a keynote address on the topic of “High Oil Prices and Global Supply and Demand.” Held every three years, the WEC Congress is known as the most prestigious energy-related gathering in the world. Its host, WEC, also known as the ‘UN’ of energy, is the foremost multinational organization in the energy field. Experts from the 94 WEC member countries participate in discussions on energy policies and take part in settling a number of energy-related treaties. Some people refer to this congress as the “Energy Olympics.” Daegu (South Korea), Durban (South Africa) and Copenhagen (Denmark) are competing to host the WEC Congress in 2013 and the other 90 member countries will decide upon the winning candidate. The 2010 WEC Congress will be held in Montreal, Canada. |
