[June 22, 2012] Daesung Group transformed one remote village in Kazakhstan suffering shortages of electricity and drinking water into a green village that produces its own electricity and drinking water with new and renewable energy. Daesung Group’s main affiliate, Daesung Energy, held a completion ceremony for this project in Saribulak, located 200 km northeast of Almaty, Kazakhstan on June 22. Daesung Energy’s CFO, Bong-Kyu Park, the South Korean Ambassador to Kazakhstan Baik Joo-Hyeon, the Minister of the Kazakhstan Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Energy, Asset Issekesheve, the governor of Almaty region, Ansar Mussakhanove and other notables in Kazakhstan participated in the ceremony. Daesung Energy’s Kazakhstan project was selected as KOICA’s Global CSR Program and began in June, 2010. This project provides electricity to each household in Saribulak through the installation of a 52 kWp stand-alone photovoltaic electric power generation system and distribution lines. It also provides drinking water for residents by developing a 130m deep tube well powered by solar energy to pump out underground water. The control building, which was built utilizing energy-saving technology, also has space for a community center. Hospitals and schools flourished in Saribulak during the Soviet Period, but after Kazakhstan’s independence, electricity and drinking water could no longer supplied. As a result, many residents left the village and only 20 households, consisting of approximately 70 people, were left to make a living from farming. The Kazakhstan government is making efforts to restore these villages and build electricity and drinking water plants for better living, as there are villages in Kazakhstan’s vast territory that lack sufficient infrastructure. Daesung Energy’s CFO Bong-Kyu Park explained “This is a pilot project to demonstrate that new and renewable energy can improve the living conditions of remote villages that lacked basic infrastructure. Building on this opportunity, Daesung will expand and diversify its business in the new and renewable energy sectors in cooperation with the Kazakhstan government, local partner firms, and the local South Korea embassy.“ He added, “Daesung Group will demonstrate the superiority of Korea’s new and renewable energy technology and become a globally recognized eco-friendly company. Daesung Group currently supplies its SolaWin system, hybrid power generation using photovoltaic and wind power to Mongolia, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and other countries and is expanding its business in the field of new and renewable energy abroad. ### |
