Daesung Group teams up with Daegu City
to build Korea’s First Tower-Type Solar Thermal Power Plant

In a joint statement from Daegu City Gas President, Chong-Moo Lee, and Daesung Group Chairman, Younghoon David Kim, came the announcement that, on August 26, a deal had been signed with Daegu City to build Korea’s first tower-type solar thermal power plant. Under the deal, the company will also be responsible for management and operations of the plant.

Daegu City Gas has been leading efforts to build a solar thermal power plant since it became a designated participant in the “2008 Strategic Technology Development project,” a low-carbon, green-growth project led by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy. Through this initiative the government will sharpen the country’s competitive edge in the international and growing renewable-energy sector.

The construction of a tower-type solar thermal power plant will cost a total of 11.65 billion KRW: 7.15 billion coming from the government and 4.5 billion from private-sector participants. Daegu City will be offering a 23,000 site (near the Shincheon sewage treatment facility in Seobyeon-dong, Buk-gu) where a 200kWh-class solar thermal power station will be completed by September 2001 with a 60 meter-high tower comprising some 200 reflector panels.
This will be the country’s first tower-type solar thermal power plant.

The solar thermal tower is a part of a government initiative aimed at developing the country’s strategic technologies. The government seeks to pave the way for power plant exports by securing core technologies used for solar thermal power generation. It further plans to launch a hydrogen generation project using high-temperature solar thermal energy which will be supplied by the new solar thermal plant.

Daesung Group, a major private-sector partner for this project, is an energy company which has participated in a variety of R&D and business models in renewable energy both at home and abroad. Using its unique “Sola-Win System”, the energy group is leading the “GEEP” (Green Eco Energy Park) initiative, a city development project aimed at turning almost 1 million-pyong desert area in Mongolia into green space. The ambitious energy project has been globally recognized and significantly has been designated an “Asia-Pacific Flagship Project” by the World Energy Council.

“The GEEP in Mongolia, and the construction of a tower-type solar thermal power plant, shows that our commitment to clean energy is now beginning to produce fruit,” said Younghoon David Kim, Chairman of Daesung Group. “Our goal is to become a leading global company and further cement our established position in the area of renewable energy by adding cutting-edge technologies such as sun-tracking and high-efficient concentration in the mid- and long term.”

This tower-type solar thermal power plant development project has also been joined by DIC, NanoCMS and Max Tech in the private sector, and – among academic and research organizations – the Korea Institute of Energy Research, the Seoul National University of Technology, Inha University and the Chungju National University – have been commissioned by the government.
