Mongolia is the world’s 17th largest and Asia’s 6th largest country in terms of land size and a large part of the population still maintains their nomadic lifestyle. From the capital city through remote villages, this country of Genghis Khan is now turning into a huge test field for new renewable energy project from South Korea. A research team from Daesung Group initially built a solar energy-generating system in Mongolia in 2005, and the Korea-based energy group is now leading a green energy park project, building a nursery in a desert area using a photovoltaic-wind hybrid system. This project is expected to mark the first overseas renewable energy model supporting Korean government’s low-carbon green growth and is expect to be able to penetrate the potential markets in Central Asia, South America and Africa.
 

[June 11, 2009] Daesung Group (Chairman Younghoon David Kim) announced on June 10 that it held an opening ceremony for its renewable energy park, a major new renewable energy solution adopting its proprietary technology, in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia.
 
The solar-wind hybrid system, a new renewable energy solution developed by Daesung Group, is designed to harness the strong sunlight and wind abundant in the country during daytime and at night, respectively, to constantly generate energy.
 
The development of a hybrid system was launched as a joint Korea-Mongolia national project back in 2003. Having abundant strong wind and sunlight combined with continental climate, Mongolia has ideal conditions as a test field for new renewable energy.
 
DICE, one of Daesung Group’s affiliates, continued to conduct research on new components despite the strong wind and heat in the desert country. Such commitment and passion has led to successful development of a solar-wind hybrid system dubbed “SolaWin” in 2005, and the company began to supply electricity in “Naran,” a remote area where the existing electricity system could not reach. Then, the initiative was expanded into the “Green Eco Energy Park” or GEEP project, the world’s first desertification prevention model using its renewable hybrid energy, in 2007.
 

 
The second “GEEP” project is a global energy solution project designed to build a solar-wind energy generating hybrid system in a 3,300,000 m2 site near the capital city of Mongolia by using wind and sunlight abundant in the country. The system will be used to supply power and pump up ground water to support the growing of trees which will be used to fight against desertification.
 
The GEEP project was launched as a “Korea-Mongolia national research” program, and a total of 2.7 billion won has been injected into the joint project backed by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning. Organized by Daesung Group, this project has also been joined by Hoseo University and a group of Korean renewable energy companies including BJ PNS, Junma Engineering and Dacowell.
 


Electricity generated through the GEEP will be used to pump up groundwater which will be supplied for creating forests and planting trees and crops, thereby, making significant contributions to the efforts to fight off desertification across the country.
 
Daesung Group further plans to commercialize and export the GEEP-based new renewable energy model aimed at providing electricity and water independently to energy-scarce countries in Central Asia, Africa and Latin America.
 
Daesung Group is presently building a third solar-wind hybrid system in Mandakh located 500km southeast from Ulaanbaatar as a partner for the government-led “International Greenhouse Gas Reduction Support Project.”

The opening ceremony for GEEP was held in Nalaykh, Mongolia at 11:00 a.m. on June 10.
