[January 28, 2013] Daesung Group, a major Korean energy and resources company, has completed a solar-powered pumping system and home solar power system project to supply water to farms and electricity to households in 20 remote areas in Bangladesh. Daesung Energy, a key subsidiary of Daesung Group, on January 28, 2013 held a ceremony to celebrate the completion of the solar-powered irrigation and home power system project in Rajshahi, located 300km west of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. As part of the East Asia Climate Partnership (EACP) led by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the project has targeted 20 rural areas in Bangladesh that lack access to electricity, and introduced stand-alone solar-powered systems to provide electricity to 1,250 households and pump groundwater to irrigate farms. The project has been completed after 30 months of work since its launch in July 2010 and is worth a total of KRW2.3 billion. The 20 project sites across Bangladesh are rich in ground water but lack energy to lift underground water to the surface for agricultural use. The completion of the solar-powered irrigation system is expected to ease drought concerns during six months of the dry season and significantly improve agricultural productivity in Bangladesh. Solar-powered irrigation systems have already been installed in some project sites, where the steady supply of water has turned barren land into fertile banana plantations, allowing up to four crop cycles per year and generating more income for farmers. The Bangladesh government expressed great interest in the renewable energy project, which creates better life and higher income, and proposed partnership projects to Daesung Energy. Alongside the solar power system installation project, Daesung Energy has offered training programs to develop local capability to operate the solar power systems by inviting Bangladesh trainees to Korea and sending Korean experts to Bangladesh. Chairman Younghoon David Kim of Daesung Group remarked, “The project in Bangladesh brings together our renewable energy technologies and pipeline technologies. It sets a good example for what I like to term the “FEW solution,” which addresses the shortage of food, energy and water simultaneously.” Chairman Kim emphasized, “As so many places in the world need creative solutions like this, this presents an opportunity for Daesung Group to establish itself as a global eco-friendly company by actively promoting Korea’s renewable energy systems overseas.” Daesung Group completed a solar-wind hybrid power system project, the Green Eco Energy Park (GEEP), to prevent desertification in Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia in 2009 and the Mandahsom project in 2010 to provide irrigation water and electricity supply in the region. In addition, the company successfully completed solar power-based renewable energy projects in Ethiopia in 2011 and Kazakhstan in June 2012. The company is now working on a solar power generation project on the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador, and is seeking to develop the renewable energy markets in Southeast Asia and Africa.
